WELCOME TO THE EARTH CHARTER EDUCATORS COMMUNITY GROUP

This group was inspired by the following message we received from member Thomas Nelson PhD:

"Thank you for the lovely welcome. I have been using the Earth Charter for years in my work with graduate students and am a big supporter of these principles.

I am currently working toward the realization of a long-time vision of establishing what is currently being called The Institute of Natural and Cultural History, Place-Based Learning, and Sustainability Education. An essential element of this effort is forging new and meaningful partnerships between the university and community organizations around the intersections between human-environmental relationships. In this case we are situated in the middle of the Sierra Nevada watershed as it flows into the California Delta. For example, this is a region that has been significantly impacted by particular kinds of farming practices and water management that has resulted in further environmental deterioration. What are the responsibilities of universities (in this case) in taking a leadership role in pulling together regional and interdisciplinary resources for the purpose of ameliorating environmental problems. One of the biggest challenges is to get university folks to think beyond their specialized disciplines and realize that environmental problems can only be addressed and solved through an interdisciplinary knowledge and accompanying strategies.

I am looking for others, particularly university faculty, who are challenged by similar roadblocks, but who also see the larger vision in action and the potential to not only focus on regional human-environmental problems but seek a dramatic transformation in how we think about education in contemporary society."

This message and the fact that there are many educators in this community led us to create this group as a special meeting place where all 'the great minds' can come together (don't be bashful - we know you all are brilliant and we depend on that to guide us :-)  This group has its own discussion forum and we started the first one 'Introductions' where you can all share a little about yourselves and you work with each other.  To add a discussion simply click the 'Start Discussion' button.  This group also has an RSS feed so if any members have blogs that they would like to have fed into this group for easy reading/access let us know - we will fish around a little on your member profiles as well.

When you post a new discussion be sure to let everyone in the group know by clicking the 'Send message to group' button above the member box to the right and send a quick message to alert everyone that you would like them to participate.  The comment box should not be used as discussions but short things like perhaps a blurp about an event or something that you don't want participatory dialogue happening around.

Enjoy and we look forward to learning a great deal from all of you!

I have recently published Emergent Teaching: A Path of Creativity, Significance, and Transformation through Rowman & Littlefield.  I discuss the Earth Charter in a chapter titled "Teaching What Really Matters."

I'd like to announce a one-week course I am teaching this May at the Earth Charter Center in Costa Rica entitled Education and Values for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter.  There is still room available.  Please share with those you think may be interested.  The information link is below.

First Homework Assignment for Educators

Tonight when we created this group we went through about half of the member profiles to find all the educators in the community but had to tend to other business so...for all of your first homework assignment please go to the 'members' page and starting at the last page and working forward (we started at the first page and went backwards) read each members profile and if they are involved in education (even retired) please invite them to participate in this group with you.  We really appreciate all your help in making this group come together...
